Q6. Can we take our family on ship?

Ans: Most companies provide facilities to take families after a certain rank.ie: At this stage, top 4 senior officers (Master, C/O, C/E, 2/E) are allowed to carry family onboard.
Q7. Can we come home during On-Board Course? What are the Holiday Schemes after it?
Ans: Students are not allowed to go home during On-Board Course except for any genuine reason and is sanction by the Master of the Ship. After the Course Completion there are 5 months working 2 months off, 4 months working 2 months off, 2 months working 2 months off Schemes with Respective Shipping Companies.


Q9. What about Bank Loan and Installments?
Ans: Every Student will get Pre-Appointment letter after passing his medical Test, after passing the Test we will provide two letters from our end .Final Appointment Letter and Provisional Admission letter (Against your Submission of DD which is not refundable and non-transferable in any case.)After this you'll contact your Local Bank ask them for Educational or Professional Loan, You'll get bank loan easily. But one guarantor is required from your end. The person should be the Payee of IT returns /Govt. or Semi Govt. Employee/having sufficient Property for Mortgage and he must be your keen relative. Candidate will be personally responsible for the sanction of bank loan, if the candidate fails for sanction bank loan his admission/selection will be cancelled.
Q10. When we pay Next payment /Installment ?
Ans: The DD, which submitted by candidate is a part of Fees. After passing your BE /Diploma/10+2/10th examination you need to submit remaining amount and generally you'll need to pay your bank Instalment after completion of Course +11/2 year period ( its depends upon bank policy) for more details please visit your local bank and ask them criteria for education loan . Q11. What is the Institute names where we can go for training ?
Ans: We are not in position to disclose the name of Institute , because its depends upon availability of seat . It will informed you accordingly. But we assured you that all Institute is D.G. Of India Approved or approved by IMU or any other Foreign Govt. Monitored by IMO Rules and Regulations.

Q13. What will be further procedure?
Ans: It will commence after submitting of your completation of your BE/Diploma/10+2 /10th exam.

Q14. Admission in same Institute?

Ans: It's not possible for us because it depends upon your course, declaration of your result and availability of seat in institute.

Ans: It's depend upon company to company  & market Situation.

Q19. Do we have a risk for that?

Ans: You don't have any risk for joining Marine industry because your job is 100% assured so there is no risk for job purpose. If you are talking about risk / accident, % of accident is very few in maritime industry in whole world than road accident happen at your city. According to India Today-Nov-2009 issue 1,00,000 people lost their life in Road Accident per annum in India. We are not mentioning here the people who permanently or temporarily injured in road accident so the risk is more on road than Shipping Industry. Accidents happen because of human negligence and error only. It can happen in any part of your life.

Q20. Is the Training fees is Fixed or it will vary?

Ans: Fixed and include what we've given in leaflet.

Q21. If our bank does not provide us bank loan then can you help us for bank loan?

Ans: We will provide you every assistance from our side. But we will not able to provide you any financial assistance from our end. We will provide you old reference letter for getting educational loan easily.
Q22. Experience Certificate? Will it be considered?
Ans:Shipping industry is most advanced and well managed so that experience is counted everywhere in the world.

Q23. Chances of coming back once we left the job?

Ans: Yes it is possible but you will have to ensure your certificates are valid at the time of re-joining and you may also require undergo some refresher training. Before joining again you need to face the medical test again.

Q24. How much time does it take for a Deck Cadet/Engine Cadet to become a Master/Chief Engineer?

Ans: A Deck Cadet/Engine Cadet can become a Master/Chief Engineer in eight to ten years subject to appears and passes all his promotion examinations in time and also completes the necessary Sea-time and Post Sea Courses on time.

Q25. What is the maximum number of days a seafarer has to sail on ship?
Ans: Typically at times the voyage could be up to 30 days or more.

Q26. What is the Retirement Age?

Ans: As per Seamen's Employment Office Order the retirement age of the person from seafaring profession is at 60 yrs. This rule also provided discretion to the Director, Seamen's Employment Office, to permit employment of seamen over 60 years of age, but not exceeding 65, provided the ship owner accepted the engagement of the seaman and the prescribed medical authority declared him 'Fit', prior to engagement.
Q27. What are the shore opportunities when I stop sailing?
Ans: It depends but if you stop sailing after becoming Master or a Chief Engineer, there will be many opportunities at shore for Marine Superintendent, Technical Superintendent, Manning Superintendent, Vetting Superintendent, Port Pilot or Harbour Master, Conservator of Ports etc.
Q28. Despite of high salary structure, why are there so much shortage of officers?
Ans: Many of the shipping companies are not investing enough in training cadets and only expecting to employ experienced officers. This is one of the reasons for shortage. Other reason could be, more ships built in a very short span of time not taking into account the availability of manpower resulting in acute shortages.
Q29. How safe is it to be on board a ship and what is the compensation in case a person is injured or dies on board?
Ans: Merchant Navy is one of the safest and most economical medium for transportation. Ships are built to operate in the safest way but the safety depends on the human being who operates the ship. Compensation varies from type and extent of injury but for death, compensation is around US $1,00,000.
Q30. Can I visit the countries that the ship arrives without a visa?
Ans: In majority of the countries, seafarers are issued a special pass to go ashore when the ship is in port. Some countries such as USA you will need a visa to go ashore..
Q31. Which international authority governs Merchant Navy and takes care of seafarers?
Ans: The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and to prevent marine pollution from ships. It is also involved in legal matters, including liability and compensation issues and the facilitation of international maritime traffic shipping on clean oceans.


Q33. Will I get the salary when I am not sailing and on leave?

Ans: No, you will not be entitled for salary when you are on leave. During the on-board training period the trainees are paid stipend and not salary.
Q34. What types of interview will be there  before I am selected?
Ans: You will have written test, Personal Interview by our panel and subject to your medical fitness carried out only by a DG Shipping Approved Doctor

Ans: Yes, you have to pay for the medical test. The medical test has been carried out only by a DG Shipping Approved Doctor.

Ans: On successful completion of training the trainee is provided the following certificates and documents : - Pre-Sea Training Certificate , Personal Survival Techniques , Personal Safety and Social Responsibility , Elementary First Aid , Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting , Oil Tanker Familiarization (Optional), Continuous Discharge Certificate (C.D.C).
Q38. What is seasickness and does everybody get it?
Ans: Seasickness is a feeling of nausea and in extreme cases, vertigo experienced after spending time on a craft on water. It is typically brought on by the rocking motion of the craft, but people who are particularly vulnerable to the condition can feel seasick simply by setting foot on a boat, even if the vessel is in dry dock. It is not necessary for everyone to get it.

Q39. If any candidates wear spectacles does an eye operation enough to make eligible for Merchant Navy?

Ans: Requirements are : 6/6 vision in both eyes (without visual aids); no colour-blindness for Deck-Officer's and for Engineering Officers use of corrective lenses permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry are 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the other eye, for Distant Unaided Vision. It will be an individual's decision to do whatever is required to meet the requirement and as long as one meets the above requirement, he will be eligible for Merchant Navy.

Q40. Can anyone having minor physical deformities like knock-knees etc. join the Merchant Navy?
Ans: It depends on the extent of the physical deformity and as long as the deformity does not form any kind of disability to perform the duties assigned onboard a ship, one should be fit for sea service. However this will be confirmed only by the D.G.Approved Doctor.
Q41. Any health problems related to seasickness and staying away from the land?
Ans: It is usual for most of the seafarers to have seasickness when he starts his sea career but everyone gets used to the sea within a short period of time.

Q42. What do you call people who are in the Merchant Marine?

Ans: Mariners, Seamen, Seafarers, Sailors, Never marines! Mariners is the preferred designation, just like the Seattle professional baseball team. The term Merchant Marines is incorrect, but sometimes used by some old time mariners.
Q43. What kinds of certificates are required to serve in Deck or Engineering positions?
Ans: This varies with the position. All technical crew should have a current certificate of Basic Safety Training (BST) according to STCW standards or you can obtain from an approved training location. For licensed crew members, a valid Certificate of Competency is required, along with a valid maritime medical certificate.

Q44. What taxes will I be responsible for after joining Merchant Navy ?
Ans: No taxes are deducted from your salary because you will get NRI status when you join Merchant Navy.

Q45. What is IMO doing about piracy?

Ans: Just a few short years ago, it seemed that the scourge of modern-day piracy was being beaten. The figures reveal quite clearly how the nature of the problem has changed .In January 2009 an important regional agreement was adopted at a high-level meeting convened by IMO. The Code of Conduct concerning the Repression of Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden recognizes the extent of the problem of piracy and armed robbery against ships in the region and in it the signatories declare their intention to co operate to the fullest possible extent and in a manner consistent with international law, in the repression of piracy and armed robbery against ships.
Q46. What is the GMDSS?
Ans: The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an integrated communications system using satellite and terrestrial radio-communications to ensure that no matter where a ship is in distress, aid can be dispatched. Under the GMDSS all passenger ships and all cargo ships over 300 gross tonnage on international voyages have to carry specified satellite and radio-communications equipment, for sending and receiving distress alerts and maritime safety information and for general communications.

Q47. If I want  to be a Captain of a large ship do I have to go to a Maritime Academy?
Ans: Yes. Any rank can be attained in the maritime industry simply by starting at the bottom. People who start out as an ordinary seaman/cadet and attain higher position in deck ship that why we say "Rich person make his son as a owner of ship but not captain".

Q49. Which is highest maritime authority in India?
Ans: After India has gained independence in 1947 and government has formed its ministry and various departments for administration and management of country. The Director General of Shipping is the statutory Maritime authority of government of India who work through the Ministry of Surface Transport, which comes under the merchant shipping act 1958. The directorate is responsible for administration and management of activities taking place in Indian sea waters. The institute is also responsible for international affairs in relevance to under water activities and hence responsible for developing good relations with other countries that are involved in similar activities.

Q50. What is a C.D.C and how do I get it?

Ans: C.D.C means a Continuous Discharge Certificate-cum-Seafarer's Identity Document. Any person who fulfils all the eligibility conditions as specified in rules 4 and 5 of these rules, for the issue of a CDC, Candidate need to apply,To the shipping master at Nau Bhavan, 10, R.K. Marg, Ballard Estate, Mumbai-400001 by registered post. Every application shall be accompanied by two copies of the applicant's recent photograph, copies of relevant certificates or documents duly attested by a Gazetted Officer as proof of eligibility, and a signed declaration to the effect that the applicant has not previously been issued a CDC and has not submitted an application for CDC to any other shipping master, along-with a fee of five hundred rupees (non refundable).

Q51. What is Eligibility for Merchant navy?
Ans: The training of all the Indian Merchant Navy personnel is the responsibility of the Government of India, who work through the Ministry of Surface Transport. Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete their B.Sc. degree in mechanical or marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field. In some cases, students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets. Navigating Officers - Candidates will need to obtain a Certificate of Competency, as per the regulations in India relating to the examinations of Masters and Mates. Conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport, in association with the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) Mumbai, the examinations help determine the promotion prospects for the officers. Q52. How I get promotion in Merchant Navy?
Ans: On gaining the certificate for Second Mate, the officer is eligible to be posted as 2nd or 3rd officer on board a good merchant ship, with good salary. Further sea service renders the officer capable of giving the First Mate (Foreign Going) and Master (Foreign Going) examinations. Passing of the latter exam gives him the certificate of competency to become the Captain of a merchant ship.

Ans: INDOS (Indian National Database of seafarers), is a computerized national database of Indian seafarers which is of use for quick reference by statutory authorities such as Flag State Port State, Immigration and Employers etc., to prevent the fraudulent issue of certificates. The database includes data like the seafarer's address, photographs, signature, telephone, etc. An INDos number consists of eight alphanumeric characters. Henceforth, no seafarer without an INDos number will be admitted to any course other than a three month pre-sea training course in India

Q54. Is my COC is Valid all Over the world who must have INDOs No.?
Ans: It is your certificate/license/ ticket required to sail onboard a merchant ship in capacity of certified officer/engineer. It can only be issued by the maritime government of any country, white listed by International Maritime Organization (IMO). However preference wise the COC of U.K., Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, India country get the highest value in the maritime world.
Q55. If I hold one country COC, Can I apply for other country COC?
Ans: Yes, you can if you have a Australia COC today you can also apply for U.K. COC that means your COC is highly appreciated and accepted worldwide.

Q56. Which one guarantees my job COC OR CDC?

Ans: CDC stands for continues discharge certificate, is a travel document like passport, for example if a person is sailing ,A UK registered ship he needs to have a U.K. CDC and similarly it goes for others also. Indian CDC can be applied from govt of India by a Indian national after attaining of COC from any white-listed country, It is COC which assured your job and not only CDC.

Q57. What is in Pay back offer?
Ans: As a general rule in Merchant Navy no Shipping Company can make any bond with his employee. Hence after providing such expensive training if any of employees will leave the company it is a huge loss. So generally candidate pay for his training program which includes his Tuition Fees ,Lodging and Boarding charges ,Food charges ,STCW Training ,Clothes and Dress materials (Uniform ) ,Entire study materials ,Work-shop ,Port / Ship visit ,D.L.P. Fees .Along with that the specific on board training for 09-18 months charges is also include. It includes his Air ticket, visa, documentation and rest of charges. This training fees paid by candidates refunded him in way of stipend called as pay back training program.

Ans: STCW (Standards for Training ,Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers ) rules 78/95 as an international convention specifically setting standard for seafarers mandatory for every candidate, who want to join maritime industry includes Personal Survival Techniques, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, Basic Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid courses.

Q60. Typical work activities on a ship?
Ans: Your rank and the size of vessel you are working on will affect your duties. On a smaller ship, activities will be more hand-on, whereas on a large ship, the role tends to be more managerial .A Deck/ Navigation officer's typical work activity includes: Navigating the vessel using range of satellite and radar systems and equipments ,Checking weather and navigating reports and taking appropriate action ,cording the safe loading, storage and unloading of cargo ,managing the care and safety of passengers , Supervising the operation and maintenance of deck machinery, e.g. : winches and cranes ,Managing ship communication systems ,Monitoring and maintaining safety , fire fighting and life saving equipments, Overseeing the ship to ensure that the highest levels of health and safety are maintained ,Maintaining legal and operation record, e.g. the ship log, keeping up to date with developments in maritime legal , commercial and political matters. An engineering officer's typical work activity includes: Directing others in the operation and maintenance of the mechanical and electrical equipments on board ,Managing power ,fuelling and distribution systems, Repairing and upgrading systems and equipment, e.g. air compressors, pumps and sewage plants , Implementing regular equipment inspections and maintenance programmes, keeping up to date with developments in the marine engineering field. 8.  Who is the governing body of Merchant Navy?
Ans. Directorate General of Shipping is the governing body of Merchant Navy who deals with implementation of shipping policy and legislation so as to ensure the safety of life and ships at sea, prevention of marine pollution, promotion of maritime education and training in co-ordination with the International Maritime Organization, regulation of employment and welfare of seamen, development of coastal shipping, augmentation of shipping tonnage, examination and certification of Merchant Navy Officers, Supervision and Control of the allied offices under its administrative jurisdiction.
9.  What is CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)?
Ans. C.D.C means a Continuous Discharge Certificate-cum-Seafarer's Identity Document. This document certifies that the person holding this is a seaman as per The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended 1995. Every seafarer must carry this document while on board, which is also an official and legal record of his sea experience.
10.  Why pre sea training is required?
Ans. Pre sea training is essential for obtaining CDC. According to the D.G. Shipping rules, the eligibility conditions for applicant seaman other than Certificated Officers -
  1. An applicant for issue of CDC as Deck, Engine and Catering (Saloon) Trainee shall have successfully completed the pre-sea training for ratings from an approved training institute as prescribed under sub-clause (b) of clause (ii) of sub-rule (2) of rule 28 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
  2. An applicant for issue of CDC shall have undergone the basic familiarization training and instructions as prescribed under sub-rule (1) of rule 33 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
  3. In case of issue of CDC on compassionate grounds, the Director General of shipping may relax any or all of the provisions of this rule except sub-rules (5) and (6) of this rule in respect of all categories.

18.  At what Circumstances Does the Admission get cancelled?

  1. Admission can be cancelled if the student is declared Medically Unfit by our panel Doctor (approved by D.G. Shipping, India.)
  2. Candidate fails to pass the Qualifying Examination required of him to join the course. (e.g. Degree, Diploma, S.S.C, H.S.C).
