1.What is Merchant Navy?
 
Merchant Navy is a Global Industry Centrally Controlled & Monitored by IMO Conventions. There after each Country has its own controlling authority e.g. D.G. Shipping India. The Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and occasionally, passengers, by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger vessels, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. A career in this field is full of adventure and long voyages to exotic places. Trained people are required for the three main departments of the ship the deck, the engine and the service department. There are, thus, many career options that are available for any youngster that has dreams to join the merchant navy.

 3.Who should join Merchant Navy?

 If you want to have adventure in your job then Merchant navy is one of the best career.

4.How is Merchant Navy better than any other career option?

After 12th if you want a job by which you can earn handsome money then at lest you have to spend 3 years but in Merchant navy if you will spend 1 year then you will start earning after 1 year as your onboard training will start with your stipend. You will become independent in very young age. In shipping sector there is a huge demand of man power by which promotional opportunity is very high. In just at the age of 21 you will start earning in Lakhs which might be very tough in other sector.

 5.Who is the governing body of Merchant Navy?

Directorate General of Shipping is the governing body of Merchant Navy who deals with implementation of shipping policy and legislation so as to ensure the safety of life and ships at sea, prevention of marine pollution, promotion of maritime education and training in co-ordination with the International Maritime Organization, regulation of employment and welfare of seamen, development of coastal shipping, augmentation of shipping tonnage, examination and certification of Merchant Navy Officers, Supervision and Control of the allied offices under its administrative jurisdiction.

 6.What is CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)?

C.D.C means a Continuous Discharge Certificate-cum-Seafarer's Identity Document. This document certifies that the person holding this is a seaman as per The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended 1995. Every seafarer must carry this document while on board, which is also an official and legal record of his sea experience.

7.Why pre sea training is required?

 Pre sea training is essential for obtaining CDC. According to the D.G. Shipping rules, the eligibility conditions for applicant seaman other than Certificated Officers -
  1. An applicant for issue of CDC as Deck, Engine and Catering (Saloon) Trainee shall have successfully completed the pre-sea training for ratings from an approved training institute as prescribed under sub-clause (b) of clause (ii) of sub-rule (2) of rule 28 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
  2. An applicant for issue of CDC shall have undergone the basic familiarization training and instructions as prescribed under sub-rule (1) of rule 33 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
  3. In case of issue of CDC on compassionate grounds, the Director General of shipping may relax any or all of the provisions of this rule except sub-rules (5) and (6) of this rule in respect of all categories.

Merchant Navy is a great career option after 12th, it is perfect for those who love travelling, adventure, interested in seeing new places and meeting new people. In this profession you will travel around the world and that too free of cost. Merchant Navy can be described as commercial fleet of non-combatant ships which deals with transportation of passengers, cargo and lots of other things by sea that may not possible to dispatch either by road, rail and air, between all the countries. Merchant Navy fleet may include Passenger ships, Tanker ships, cargo ships, bulk carriers, refrigerator ships, container ships, barge carrying ships including roll on/roll off ships. With growing economic and fastest developing country India have a largest merchant shipping fleets and have a variety of jobs in Indian as well as foreign vessels.
  •  Eligibility for Merchant Navy;  Merchant Navy can be joined after 10th   as seafarer after qualifying pre sea courses or after 12th  as an officer  through various degree or diploma courses in mainly two specialized fields, Nautical (Deck) and  Marine engineering. Unmarried Female and Male candidate are eligible .
Age Limit : 17-25 Years
Medical Standards:
Candidates should be physically and Mentally strong, fit for sea-services under standard norms
Eye-Sight :
6/6 without glasses, No color Blindness. (The candidate is subject to medical examination).

  • Courses to Join Merchant Navy ;  There are various courses to join after 10th or 12th in both private and govt training institute recognized and approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping. Theses are ;-
·         Pre Sea Training – In this course you will get proper training of maintenance of engine as well as deck . It is also known as G.P.R (General Purpose Training) you can join this course after 10th with minimum aggregate percentage of 40% with Mathematics, science and English as compulsory subject and should have 40% marks in each of them. The time duration of this course is 06 months and age limit is joining this course is 17 to 25 years. Beside that other short term courses are also there
3 month Pre-Sea Course in Deck rating.
3 month Pre-Sea Course in Engine rating.
4 month Pre-Sea Course in Saloon rating.
·         Deck cadet – In this course you are given a diploma in Nautical Science. The minimum education qualification for this course is 10+2 with P.C.M (Physics, Chemistry and Math) as compulsory subjects and you should have scored minimum 50% in aggregate and 50% in English at 12th level.

1 year Pre-Sea Diploma in Nautical Science
 Its leads to B.Sc Nautical Science affiliated to Indian Maritime University and approved by DG Shipping (Govt. of India) eligibility – 10+2 PCM/Bsc. Degree/ B.E./B. Tech. Degree
HND (Higher National Diploma) Nautical Science 
Qualification- Minimum 10+2 PCM
HND (Higher National Diploma) Marine Engineering  
Qualification- Minimum 10+2 PCM
B.E Marine Engineering (4-Year Degree course in Marine Engineering)
Qualification- Minimum 10+2 PCM and English
B.S. in Nautical Technology  (3 years training at Institute + 1 year at Sea)
Qualification- Minimum 10+2 PCM
3-Year B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science
Qualification- Minimum 10+2 PCM and English
2-year Marine Engineering course
Qualification – Diploma in Mechanical /Marine/ Naval Architecture / Electrical / Electrical and Electronics Engineering
1-year Marine Engineering Course, Graduate Marine Engineer(GME)
Qualification – Graduation in BE (Mech) Engineering / Naval Arch. with minimum of 50% marks in final year and with 50% minimum marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.


  • Merchant Navy entrance exam ; The All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) is conducted by Bharat Shipping Limited usually in the month of November-December every year for following courses;

B.Tech NAVAL ARCHITECURE & SHIP BUILDING (4 years)  Qualification -Pass HSC OR 10+2 from a recognised board with 50% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) Maximum age-25 years.
B.Tech – MARINE ENGINEERING: Qualification -Pass HSC OR 10+2 from a recognised with 60% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) Maximum age-25 years
B.Sc NAUTICAL SCIENCE: Qualification -Pass HSC OR 10+2 from a recognised with 60% average in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) Maximum age-25 years
PRE-SEA TRAINING G.P. RATINGS: Qualification – 10th pass with total average of 40% marks (with Mathematics & Science) OR Has Passed in Govt. approved 2 years ITI course from recoganised institute with 50% minimum aggregate marks. 40% marks in English subject shall required  in 10th or 12th OR any Degree OR Diploma course approved by AICTE. Maximum age- 25 years.
M.B.A. SHIPPING & LOGISTICS:  Any degree from a GOVT recognized University OR Mariners holding following professional qualification obtained after study-cum training of 6 years after 10+2 OR Diploma from a recognised Institution leading to:

If you aspire to become an Indian Navy Officer in Electrical/Marine Engineering or any other profile, then you must pass class 12th or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects with an aggregate percentage of 75% marks in all three subjects and minimum 50% marks in English in 10th and 12th from a recognized board. After that, you have to pursue
    Indian Navy Courses after 12th to become an officer.
