Course overview

The Graduate Marine Engineer (GME) programme is an 18-month course designed to transform candidates into highly skilled, globally employable professionals for the shipping and maritime industry. This comprehensive programme has been crafted by industry leaders to meet global standards.

During the first 8 months of on-shore training, candidates will gain a thorough understanding of the nuances of the shipping industry and their role within it. Following this, they will undergo 4 months of training as a Trainee Marine Engineer on a ship, where they will further develop their practical skills. Candidates will then train for 6 months as a Fifth Engineer on ship. After 10 months of on-board training, all candidates must attend a 4-month preparatory course for their Class IV exam.

Mandatory Courses: B.E. / B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture )

Candidates passed BE /B TECH (Mechanical Engineering) or BE / B TECH(Mechanical or Marine Engineering), Naval Architecture with minimum mentioned marks. Also, candidate must have minimum 50% marks in English subject at at 10th OR 12th OR in Degree Exam. Final years students can also apply on provisional basis.

Other eligibility criteria
Candidates should be healthy and physically fit for sea service as per STCW 2010/MS Medical rules 2000 and all its amendment as applicable to seafarers. Eyesight: Distance vision (unaided) : 6/12 in each eye; or 6/9 in better eye and 6/18 in other eye. Normal colour vision. Minimum Height:157 cms Minimum Weight: 48 kgs

 

Application process

1. Online application form
 

Candidates must apply for the GME course via an online application form and pay an application fee. Candidates will receive further instructions from the institute's admissions office.

2. Online test
 

Candidates will receive an email containing a link to an online examination. Since the test links are sent out in batches, candidates are advised to regularly check their email and add academy@greatship.com to their contact list to prevent emails being diverted to their spam folder. After all candidates take the test, the admissions team will determine the cut-off score. Candidates who meet or exceed the cut-off score will be invited for an interview.

 
3. Personal interview
 

Candidates who meet the cut-off score in the online test will be invited for an interview at the GEIMS campus in Lonavala.

 
4. Medical test
 

Candidates who are shortlisted after the personal interview are required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination in Mumbai, in accordance with the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000. Details regarding the medical assessment will be provided by the admissions team.

5. Final selection
 

The final merit list is decided based on academic scores, online test scores, personal interview, and the medical test. Once selected, candidates are required to pay a non-refundable booking amount within the specified deadline to secure their seat.

6. Sponsorship letter
 

On receipt of the booking amount, the candidate will be issued a sponsorship letter with all the details.

7. Joining formalities
 

If candidates wish to avail a loan, they are advised to complete the necessary procedures prior to the joining date. On the day of joining, candidates should carry all the required documents, including their educational certificates, passport, and photographs.

Graduate Marine Engineering

 

If you are a Graduate Engineer and interested to join merchant navy than you have come to right place. Many graduate engineers want to know about merchant navy courses after graduation or merchant navy career. Institute of Maritime Studies Goa welcomes you to Maritime Training courses for Graduate Marine  Engineering Course. Graduate Engineers who have completed degree in either Mechanical, Naval Architecture or Mechanical and Automation have the opportunity to be a Marine Engineer. At Institute of Maritime Studies Goa we conduct one year pre sea marine training course in marine engineering for graduate engineers in mechanical and naval architecture.

 

Career Scope

On completion of training both graduate and diploma entry candidates are permitted to join ships immediately. After completion of 6 months sea experience they can obtain MEO Class IV Part A from MMD Govt. of India. Graduate candidates are exempted from appearing in this exam while diploma entry candidates have to appear in this exam.

All of them can then appear for MEO Class IV Part B.

Trainee Engineer rises to become a Chief Engineer normally in 7 to 8 years, subject to passing further examinations conducted by Mercantile Marine Department, Government of India. 

 

Salaries

The Salaries of Junior Engineer vary from company to company. However, approximate starting salary is ₹25000/- per month for Indian companies and US $500-1100 in foreign companies. A chief Engineer draws a salary of over ₹700000/- per month.

Selection Procedure:

a. On receipt of online applications, payment of Rs. 3000/-( non-refundable) and soft copy of passport size colour photograph in JPEG format (maximum 120×160 pixels) and file size less than 20 KB uploaded on the application form, the eligible candidate will be sent an Admit card by email only.
b. Candidate should take a colour print out of the Admit card and bring to the examination hall. They should follow all Instructions on the Admit card.
c. The details of the test centre will be mentioned in the Admit card.
d. The list of Candidates shortlisted for interview, along with an interview schedule will be displayed on www.imsgoa.org. The interviews will be held at the Institute at Goa or online, on the dates mentioned in the Admission Schedule. (Note: No separate notification shall be sent to candidates)
e. Names of the candidates selected in the interviews and also those placed in waitlist will be informed at the Institute.
f. All candidates selected for Interview must bring with them an Admission fee of Rs. 6000/- and Rs. 4000/-cash for Medical fee (i.e. RS.10,000/-), in anticipation of being selected. These payments can also be made by credit/debit cards at the Institute / online at IMS Portal.
g. The selected and waitlisted candidates will have to deposit payments before verification of certificates.
h. The Admission fee of Rs. 6,000/- will be returned to waitlist Candidate not called for selection and/or fails in Medicals. The medical fee of Rs.4,000/- will not be refunded after undergoing a medical test.
i. Candidates who are awaiting final semester results may also apply.
j. One set of self-attested photocopies of following Certificates is to be brought by the candidate at the time of certificate verification/ during the interview along with the originals.

  1. Passing Certificates of Std. X and XII, showing date of birth.
  2. Marksheet of X, XII, Diploma, Degree showing 50% or more marks in English.
  3. Provisional / Degree / Diploma Certificate issued by the University / Technical Board (Certificate issued by College is acceptable if all marksheets are issued by the board)
  4. Marksheets of all semesters of Degree /Diploma.
  5. Bonafide student and AICTE/UGC approval Certificate in the format available at the end of these instructions. To be printed on College/ Polytechnic letterhead and signed by Principal/Registrar.
  6. Certificates for any additional courses done, extracurricular
    activities like NSS / NCC/ Scouts etc.
  7. Candidates who have appeared for the qualifying examination and awaiting results should attach a certificate from the appropriate authority to that effect.
  8. Proof of Work Experience, if any. It is the candidate´s responsibility to ensure his eligibility as per details given above, and also fill in the true and correct information in the application form.
