Deck and Engine Ratings -Support staff who assist officers |
Ratings are personnel who
assist officers in all departments - skilled seafarers who carry out
essential tasks in the day-to-day running of the ship. As a rating
you'll be trained in fire prevention and sea survival skills. In an
emergency you'll help to deal with hazardous incidents, for example, as a
member of a fire-fighting party or fast rescue boat crew. |

GP Rating Course
Duration: 6 month
Age Limit: Between 17.5 to 25 years
Entry requirement: Pass with aggregate 40% marks in
10th Standard from a recognized Board with Science, Mathematics as
subjects and with minimum 40% marks in English language either in 10th,
12th or diploma/degree exam.
OR
Pass in 2-Year I.T.I. course from Govt. Approved Institute with minimum
50% aggregate marks in final year and minimum 40% marks in English at
10th or 12th or diploma/degree exam.
AND
Pass CET conducted by DG Shipping Govt. of India and/or CET of Training Institute |

DECK RATINGS |
Steer the ship and assist
the deck officer in other navigational duties. In port, they secure the
ship to the dock, carry out maintenance and contribute to the security
of the vessel. |

|
ENGINEERING RATINGS |
Maintain shipboard
machinery. They carry out routine oiling, greasing and servicing, and
strip, repair and fit equipment parts. Experienced ratings help the
engineering officers to monitor the main plant and other equipment to
make sure it is run safely. |

What qualities will you need? |
You'll need a sincere
interest in going to sea and must be a good team worker with initiative
and the maturity to work unsupervised. You will also need to be able to
get on well with people. You'll be able to accept responsibility and be
willing to adapt your skills and learn new ones. As a deck or
engineering rating a lot of the work you do will be practical, so you'll
need good hand skills to operate technical equipment. |

Seaman Grade 1 |
Member of the deck crew -
may be referred to as Ordinary Seaman, Able-bodied Seaman, Bosun,
General Purpose Rating.
Undertakes watches, and duties include steering the vessel, standing
lookout and assisting the officer on watch. Carries out deck and
accommodation patrols. Moors and unmoors the vessel, secures and
unsecures cargo, and carries out deck maintenance and cleaning. The most
senior and experienced at this level may have responsibilities
tantamount to foreman. Duties would additionally include directly
supervising maintenance operations and allocating tasks. Some ratings at
Seaman Grade 1 level may be qualified to work on the deck or
engineering side, and are classed as "General Purpose Ratings". |

Pumpman |
Normally a member of the
deck department, but sometimes a member of the engineering department.
Works on tankers and operates pumps and discharges liquid cargo, mostly
petroleum products. Responsible for maintaining and repairing all cargo
handling equipment. |

|
Fitter |
Member of the engineering
crew, semi-skilled and mechanically trained. Responsible for ensuring
the continuous running of machinery and equipment, organizing routine
maintenance procedures and any necessary repairs. Normally the most
senior rating on the engineering side. |

|
Motorman (Mechanic) |
Member of the engineering department. Maintains the engine room machinery plant. |
|
|
General hand (Oiler, Wiper) |
Member of the engineering department. Cleans the machinery plant, checks systems and assists with engineering tasks. |
|
|
Trainee Rating (Junior Ordinary Seafarer) |
Learns the role of Seaman whilst working towards the Navigational Watch Rating Certificate. |
